How Many Eggs is Good for IVF?

When women use injectable FSH drugs for stimulation of the ovarian when trying in vitro fertilization, the response level of the ovaries differs greatly. This results in a variety of eggs being retrieved during the procedure of egg retrieval.

Antral follicle counts are the best predictor of the response of the ovaries and the number of eggs that will be retrieved before we stimulate the woman with FSH-containing drugs. To a large extent, the more eggs we have to work with, the more likely IVF treatment will be successful.

During An IVF Egg Retrieval, How Many Eggs Are Typically Retrieved?

The answer is entirely dependent on the women undergoing the process of egg retrieval, so providing an average makes no sense - and would be inaccurate. Doctors typically won't follow a traditional IVF treatment cycle if they think they can get less than 2 eggs, so let's use 2 as the lowest.

Some young women with a large egg reserve, or women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome who have a large number of follicles that contain egg, can have more than forty eggs extracted at once! There is a lot of variation within this 2-40 range, owing mostly to the woman's age at the time of the egg retrieval.

Again, this is determined by the woman's age and the number of children she wishes to have. Because the younger the woman, the better the quality of her eggs, a younger woman with fewer retrieved eggs may have similar odds of getting pregnant as an older woman with more retrieved eggs.

However, having about ten to twelve mature eggs after egg retrieval is a good number of eggs and will give a woman a good chance of having 1 normal embryo at least, which gives a woman a 60-65% chance of pregnancy and live birth.

Because not all normal embryos will result in pregnancy, having several normal embryos available for transfer in the event of an unsuccessful transfer produces the finest chances of success. According to RMA research, women with three normal embryos have a 95% chance of becoming pregnant.
